The Chandigarh mayor election scheduled to be held today was postponed till further notice. Councilors received text messages attributing the postponement of the election due to the ill health of Anil Masih, election presiding officer.

Opposition parties protested against the recent development. Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party have allied for the mayoral election. Protesting against the decision, AAP leader Raghav Chadha wrote on X that BJP is gripped by ‘democracy-phobia’ a fear of democracy and free & fair elections. “BJP is scared of INDIA’s Triumph,” he added.

The AAP leader alleged that the BJP fearing losing the election in a deliberate attempt, they have postponed the elections.

“With 20 out of the total 36 votes in its favor, INDIA alliance is poised to win the Chandigarh Mayoral Elections. BJP is all set to lose badly. This has given the BJP sleepless nights and forced its dirty tricks department to work overtime. Result?” he added.

In an attempt to adjourn the election, initially, the secretary of Elections fell sick followed by the presiding officer, he further said.

Chadda said that this is a deliberate attempt to postpone elections, and undeniably serves as evidence that the BJP is, without a doubt, afraid of INDIA alliance. He then mocked the BJP’s decision by comparing it with a disgruntled child who plays gully cricket, who upon being called out takes away the bat and declares an end to the game.

Raghav Chadha concluded the post by questioning the credibility of our democracy, “is our democracy so weak that elections will only happen when the BJP is winning, and elections will be adjourned if the BJP is losing?”

The Aam Aadmi Party said that no BJP councilors reached the house, which meant they already knew the election wouldn’t take place, reports Hindustan Times.
Congress said they will move court against the postponement of the elections. Former MP and Congress leader Pawan Bansal alleged that BJP was not ready to face the defeat and thus they intentionally postponed the elections. “If BJP would have believed in democracy, they would have requested DC to change the presiding officer. This is end of democracy. We will now move to court,” he added.
