Congress Breaks The Red Wall: K Binimon Wins High-Stakes Battle In Vaikom Constituency
KOTTAYAM: In a result that has stunned political observers across the state, the Indian National Congress has pulled off a dramatic victory in the Vaikom assembly constituency, a traditional bastion of the Left Democratic Front. In a nail-biting finish that went down to the final moments of the 13th round, UDF candidate K Binimon emerged victorious over the Communist Party of India’s P Pradeep.
The final declaration confirmed a slim but decisive margin of 1,360 votes, marking a historic shift in one of Kerala’s most politically significant Scheduled Caste reserved seats.
The victory is particularly significant as Vaikom has long been considered an impenetrable fortress for the CPI, which had held the seat with comfortable margins in previous elections. From the start of the day, the counting saw a seesaw battle with leads fluctuating between the two primary contenders. However, as the final EVMs were tabulated, Binimon managed to consolidate a lead that the LDF could not overcome, effectively ending the Left’s decades-long streak in the constituency.
Local factors, including an intense campaign focused on regional developmental issues and a visible shift in the traditional vote base, appear to have favored the Congress candidate. The loss of Vaikom is a major setback for the LDF in the Kottayam district, while for the UDF, it serves as a morale-boosting win that underscores their renewed strength in the 2026 assembly polls. As the official certificate was handed over, jubilant UDF workers celebrated the “breach of the red wall,” signaling a new chapter for the historic constituency.
