"Congress Coming, BJP Going": BJP's Ashok Tanwar Joins Congress Days Ahead Of Elections

In a significant blow to the Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) days ahead of the state assembly election, former Sirsa MP Ashok Tanwar  rejoined the Congress party.

The former Haryana Congress president who, after resigning from the party, switched to the Trinamool Congress, then Aam Aadmi Party and eventually the BJP earlier this year, returned to the Congress, surprisingly hours after seeking votes for the BJP candidate in  Safidon in Jind district.

During Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Mahendergarh, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda welcomed the political turncoat back into the party in the presence of the opposition leader.

Taking to X, Haryana Congress handle said the journey to make Haryana number 1 again will be strengthened by Tanwar’s arrival. “There is only one message in Haryana – Congress is coming, BJP is going,” Congress stated.

A political turncoat, Tanwar joined three parties after resigning from Congress in 2019. After taking a respite from politics, Tanwar in 2021 November joined the Trinamool Congress, and then to the Aam Aadmi Party in April 2022.

Expressing his admiration for Prime Minister Modi and praising his governance, Tanwar joined the BJP in January 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

However, Tanwar who has completed a PhD in Medieval Indian History from Jawaharlal Nehru University, started his political career with the Congress youth wing. In 2009, the grand old party gave Tanwar a Lok Sabha ticket from Haryana’s Sisra constituency, which he won with a relative majority. In February 2014, Tanwar was elected as the state Congress president, but lost the general election the same year to NLD’s Charanjeet Singh Rori.

Following his 2019 second electoral debacle to the BJP’s Sunita Duggal, who won with more than 3 lakh margin, Tanwar began to switch across political parties. Notably, during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress’ Selja Kumari wrest back the Sisra seat with a margin of over 2.5 lakh votes, giving hopes for the revival of the Congress party during the upcoming assembly elections.
