Durai Murugan Kathir Anand is fielded as the DMK candidate from the Vellore constituency. Kathir Anand is the son of the DMK General Secretary and Minister for Water Resources in the Government of Tamil Nadu, Durai Murugan.

He was earlier elected as an MP in the 17th Lok Sabha from the Vellore Constituency. In the 2019 election, he won by securing 4,85,340 votes against AIADMK leader A.C Shanmugam. Last month the DMK MP was accused of using derogatory statements against women during a campaign event in Vellore. He allegedly made remarks suggesting that women’s faces were shining due to the use of fairness cream and powder and questioned whether they have got Rs 1,000.

While addressing the public in Vellore, Kathir Anand asked, “I can see most faces of women are shining. Looks like you have applied Fair and Lovely fairness cream and Ponds powder. Did you already get Rs 1,000?”

Born in 1975, Kathir Anand hails from the village of Vellore. The 2019 general election was his first political appearance. As for the DMK leader’s educational qualification, he holds an MBA degree in International Business from Baldwin Wallace, OHIO, USA.

Kathir Anand is accused of tax evasion by the Income tax department. However, the case is in court and no convictions have been made yet.

Vellore Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu. After delimitation, the constituency is composed of six assembly segments. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, B Senguttuvan of AIADMK won the Vellore seat by securing 3,83,719 votes.
