Dipsita Dhar: A JNU Alumna, Student Activist, SFI Joint Secretary And CPI (Marxist) Candidate From Serampore

Dipsita Dhar is contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections on the CPI (M) ticket from the Serampore constituency. In 2021, Ms Dhar contested the election from the Bally constituency. BJP has nominated Kabir Shankar Bose and TMC fielded Kalyan Banerjee for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 from Serampore constituency.

Dipsita Dhar who completed her higher education in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, remained active in student politics during her college and university days. She holds a post-graduation, MPhil, and PhD in Geography from JNU. While studying at Asutosh College, Southern Kolkata, she joined the Student Federation of India (SFI) and remained active in political movements including the Justice for Rohit Vemula movement, anti-CAA protests and various other protests happened in her student days in JNU.

The CPI (M) candidate has been an advocate of gender equality and women”s education. As part of her campaign in 2021, Dhar said, “Hindus and Muslims all feel hungry in the same manner, Hunger does not distinguish between communities”. She also gave high importance to youth employment during her campaign.

During the last Lok Sabha elections, the TMC candidate Kalyan Banerjee won the Serampore seat with 637707 votes while Debjit Sarkar of the BJP lost the election with a massive margin of 98536 votes. The CPI (M) candidate secured only 9% of the votes. The total voter turnout was 78.54%.

The Serampore Lok Sabha constituency is comprised of Jagatballavpur, Domjur, Uttarpara, Serampore, Chamdani, Chanditala, and Jangipara assembly regions. Earlier from 1999 to 2009, Serampore was a CPI (M) seat while from 2009 onwards TMC candidate Kalyan Banerjee won the seat consecutively.

Sermapore Lok Sabha seat is a general category parliament seat which lies in part of Hoogly district and part of Hawrah district. The total literacy rate in the constituency is 74.03%. The constituency has a significant SC and Muslim population. The SC, ST, and Muslim populations are 21.66%, 3.09%, and 18.76% of the total population.

The result for the Serampore Lok Sabha Constituency will be announced on June 4, 2024.
