Haryana Congress MLA Promises Law Against Mob Lynching, Inquiry On 2023 Nuh Violence

Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed, who is vying for another term from the Nuh constituency in Haryana, promised a law against mob lynching by the cow vigilantes. Also, the deputy leader of the opposition in the Haryana assembly, Aftab promised a judicial probe into the communal violence that rocked the Nuh district in 2023, leading to the death of  six people and the destruction of properties.

Regarding the communal violence, Aftab alleged that the administration allowed the atrocities despite warnings, causing loss of lives and property, and underscored that the clash was due to the BJP’s propagation of anti-social elements in the garb of cow vigilantism. “They created a fear psychosis, and the atmosphere was charged up,” the Congress MLA said, adding that he had alarmed the administration to prevent the incident.

“The chief minister was busy having a meeting in Rewari; only 300 policemen were deputed for the entire route despite anti-social elements from both sides issuing challenges… They let it happen, and to date, we have been demanding that a judicial inquiry be held (to find) the officers responsible, the causes of the causes of such violence, and the way they handled the violence,” Aftab said in an interview with PTI.

The MLA further said that after the violence, the government demolished the homes of some people who were not even involved, adding that many poor people lost their lives and the stringent UAPA was initiated. Aftab was referring to the alleged retributory action taken by the BJP government targeting Muslims.

“That is the reason the Congress has been demanding a judicial inquiry into what led to the communal incident… It was not just the loss of lives and property but also faith amongst people,” the MLA said, highlighting that the people understood the game and realized they had to live in harmony.

Moreover, Haryana has witnessed several cases of mob lynching, alleging beef consumption, raising concerns regarding the rule of law. The Congress leader also assured law against the lynching in his interview.

The 58-year-old retributory is pitted against the BJP’s Sanjay Singh, who is currently representing Sohna constituency. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has fielded Tahir Hussain, the son of Zakir Hussain, a three-time MLA from the constituency. Notably, Nuh voters have never elected BJP’s candidates, and the constituency has voted to power both Congress and INLD.

The Congress is gearing up the campaign in the election-bound state, concentrating on the unemployment crises the state is grappling with. The party has made promises to the disgruntled youth on the employment generation. The grand old party is also confident to return to power, given its decent performance during the recent Lok Sabha elections in the state.
