As per the latest Election Commission (EC) data, PDP veteran Abdul Rehman Veeri is trailing in Shangus-Anantnag East assembly constituency. In the seat, National Conference (NC) leader Reyaz Ahmad Khan is leading with a margin of 7401 votes. The senior leader who has tasted victory for the fourth consecutive time is not likely to continue his winning streak in a different constituency.
Abdul Rehman Veeri, also known as Abdul Rehman Bhat currently serves as the vice president of the party. He represented Bijbehara assembly segment from 1999 till 2018, when the BJP-PDP coalition government parted ways. He served as Minister for Horticulture, Haj, and Auqaf in the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government. In the BJP-PDP alliance government, he handled ministerial portfolios – Public Works and Parliamentary Affairs.
Veeri who shifted his electoral field to Anantnag East since Iltija Mufti, daughter of PDP chief and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, is making her electoral debut from Bijbehara.
As counting of votes progressing in Jammu Kashmir, NC-Congress alliance crosses half way mark. According to EC data, NC-Congress alliance is leading in 48 seats, BJP and PDP at 29 and 3e seats, respectively. This is the first election held in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 and as a Union Territory.
