In the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP candidate Sunil Sharma secured victory from Padder-Nagseni assembly segment. He won the seat by defeating National Conference’s Pooja Thakur by a margin of 1,546 votes.
Sharma is a senior party leader and Jammu and Kashmir UT General Secretary. He has served as a minister in the former PDP-BJP government.
In 2014 elections, Sharma had fielded and won the polls from Kishtwar assembly segment. He contested against National Conference (NC) candidate Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo and secured victory by a margin of 2852 votes. This time, BJP’s new face Shagun Parihar contested and won from the Kishtwar assembly segment.
Suni Sharma faced criminal charges for his alleged involvement in the 2008 communal clashes in eastern Kishtwar district of the State. However, the charges did not deter the coalition alliance to chose him as a minister.
Pooja Thakur is greatly appreciated for her commitment to advancing women’s rights and her efforts to improve political participation among youth. Her campaign stressed on addressing local problems, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure, which made her a strong contender against Sunil Sharma.
