Kodungallur Verdict: Congress' O J Janeesh Breaks CPI Citadel With Decisive Victory

In a significant political shift that captured statewide attention, the Kodungallur Assembly constituency delivered a decisive verdict in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, marking a notable turnaround in a seat long watched for its competitive political character.

O. J. Janeesh of the Indian National Congress has secured victory with a margin of 8,308 votes, defeating V. R. Sunil Kumar of the Communist Party of India. The result was officially declared after the completion of all 15 rounds of counting, confirming a strong win for the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the constituency.

The outcome is particularly noteworthy as Kodungallur has been considered a key battleground with a strong Left presence in previous elections. This time, however, the electorate signalled a clear shift, with the Congress candidate steadily building a lead from the early rounds and maintaining it throughout the counting process.

O. J. Janeesh’s campaign is believed to have gained momentum through consistent grassroots outreach and focus on local development issues, including infrastructure, livelihood concerns, and welfare delivery. His ability to connect with both urban and semi-urban voters appears to have played a crucial role in shaping the verdict.

On the other hand, V. R. Sunil Kumar, the sitting MLA and a prominent CPI leader, faced a tough contest and was unable to retain the seat despite strong organizational backing. The margin of over eight thousand votes reflects a clear setback for the Left in this constituency.

Political observers view this result as part of a broader trend in the district, where voter sentiment appears to be shifting in favour of the UDF. The Kodungallur verdict, in particular, is seen as a key indicator of changing political dynamics in traditionally competitive regions.

The counting process was conducted smoothly, with officials ensuring transparency and accuracy across all rounds.

With this victory, O. J. Janeesh has successfully captured Kodungallur, delivering a strong result for the Congress and adding momentum to the UDF’s performance in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections.
