Kulbir Singh Zira is the Congress’ candidate in Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, he is fielded against AAP’s Laljit Singh Bhullar, BJP’s Manjit Singh Manna Mianwind, and Shiromani Akali Dal”s (SAD) Virsa Singh Valtoha.
Zira is a former MLA from the Zira constituency in Punjab”s Ferozepur district. Moreover, he holds a prestigious position as the Vice President of the Punjab Youth Congress.
In 2023, he was arrested at his residence. The arrest came after the complaint of Surjit Singh, Zira constituency’s Block Development Program Officer (BDPO), on charges of obstructing him and the other staff from discharging their duties. The Congress party claimed that Zira had been conducting a protest in front of the BPDO office, voicing grievances against the perceived negligence of officials in fulfilling their responsibilities and their alleged disregard for the welfare of the public.
The protest outside the BDPO office became a turning point in Zira”s political journey. It showcased his active involvement in the Congress Party and his commitment to fighting for the rights of the people. Zira”s leadership during the protest earned him respect and admiration from both his party members and the public.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Jasbir Singh Gill, representing the Congress party, emerged as the winner in the electoral battle for the seat. He garnered a total of 459,710 votes; meanwhile, Bibi Jagir Kaur, the SAD candidate, secured a margin of 319,137 votes.
