The Congress leader and Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi on Thursday received notice from the Election Commission on his “Panauti” comment on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the notice, Rahul Gandhi was asked to state an explanation over his comments. The action was taken by the commission following a complaint filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Rahul Gandhi’s panauti” (bad omen) and “pickpocket” jibes at Narendra Modi went controversial in the recent times and the poll body asked the Congress MP to respond by November 25. It was on Wednesday, the BJP moved against Rahul Gandhi and given a complaint to the country’s election office.

According to the complaint filed with ECI, comparing the PM of a nation to a “jaibkatra” (meaning pickpocket) and “pannauti” (bad omen) is “most unbecoming of a senior leader and is a symptom of plummeting levels of political discourse”, said BJP. They added that addressing any person as jaibkatra not only amounts to vicious abuse and personal attack but also a “character assassination”.

The BJP accused Rahul Gandhi as the former made those controversial remarks with a clear intention to harm the reputation of Narendra Modi and to mislead the public. The Congress and BJP are on the forefront of an election battle these days as five of the Indian states are facing legislative assembly elections. The results will be declared on December 3 and both the parties are in huge expectations and skips no chance to blame and accuse the other.

It was on Tuesday; Rahul Gandhi denoted the Indian Prime Minister as panauti and said the PM’s arrival to witness the ICC Men’s World Cup final match in the Ahmedabad stadium caused the defeat of India in the match. In the finals India lost the championship to Aussies for six wickets. “Panauti… panauti… panauti… our boys were well on their way to winning the world cup but panauti made them lose… the people of this country know”, said Rahul Gandhi addressing a poll rally in Rajasthan. “The pickpocket never comes alone, there are three people. One comes from the front, one from the back and one from a distance… Prime Minister Narendra Modi”s job is to divert your attention”, Rahul Gandhi added.
