The current BJP MP Khagen Murmu will run for reelection from his Maldaha Uttar constituency in West Bengal. Murmu, who represents a prominent tribal community in Bengali politics, served in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly three times between 2006 and 2019 as a CPIM member. In 2019, the Santhali politician joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The 64-year-old BJP candidate graduated from Patna”s Magadh University. Throughout his time as an MP, Khagen Murmu has demonstrated an active involvement in house affairs. He has 94% attendance records, has taken part in 52 discussions pertaining to Maldah, his home district, and other topics, and has raised 308 questions in the house. In his constituency, Murmu has backed the development of infrastructure, renewable energy, food security, health, and the upliftment of marginalized sections.
He served as a permanent special invitee to the ministries of power and new and renewable energy, and as a member of the consultative committee under the Jal Shakti ministry. In 1993, he began his political career as a member of the Zila Parishad in Maldah. In 2019, he was elected to the Lok Sabha on the BJP ticket.
With a 37.61 percent vote share, Khagen Murmu was victorious in the 2019 elections, defeating AITC Mausam Noor by more than 5% of the total.
