Edited by Uzma Parveen

Mala Roy, the sitting TMC MP from Kolkata Dakshin since 2019, has been given the party ticket from Kolkata Dakshin, West Bengal. She has been entrusted with the responsibility again by the TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee among the 42 candidates in West Bengal.

She graduated from Vidyasagar College for Women, Calcutta University. Mala has been the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Chairperson since 2015. Earlier she was a member of the Indian National Congress and later joined Trinamool Congress in 2000. In the last general elections, Mala defeated Chandra Kumar Bose of BJP by a margin of 155,192 votes and secured 33 percent votes. The BJP candidate secured 24 percent of the votes and the CPIM candidate came third in 2019.

During her tenure, Mala attended the house proceedings only with 43% attendance, participated in 10 debates, and asked 205 questions.

She has been in controversy over her remarks against the BJP during a party rally when she threatened the party workers with breaking legs and crushing their heads if they tried to create trouble in the constituency.

The Kolkata Dakshin has been a bastion of TMC since 1998, which was a stronghold of INC. TMC’s founder and chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been the longest holder of the seat. It is a general category parliament seat with a literacy rate of 74.65 percent. The constituency has 22 percent, 5.9 percent, and 0.3 percent of Muslim, SC, and ST voters respectively. The constituency represents 98.49 percent urban voters and 1.6 percent rural voters.

The Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha constituency will go to polling booths on June 1, 2024.
