Vadakara has become one of the hottest constituencies since the two major fronts in Kerala- UDF and LDF announced their heavyweight candidates. The nomination of two sitting MPs, CPM’s K K Shailaja and Congress’s Shafi Parambil. A pre-poll survey by Malayala Manorama predicted an intense battle in the constituency.

The grand old party’s choice of Palakkad sitting MLA was meant to counter the threat of the CPM strongwoman K K Shailaja. The LDF fielded the former health minister eying to wrest back the seat, which it lost in the 2009 general elections. The popular minister known as “teacher Amma,” Shailaja enjoys considerable support among the public especially after the intentional attention she received for Covid pandemic handling. political analysist expresses doubts whether Shafi Parambil, the popular youth leader of the Congress party, could break the political clout that the former health minister has.

Notably, the BJP has never been a player, standing in a distant third. However, the party has this time fielded its youth leader with connections among people from the constituency, to penetrate to voters. However, the survey has indicated a surge in the saffron party”s vote share, while presuming a dip for the two major fronts.

Since 2009, Congress has been consecutively representing the seat. The party’s veteran leader K. Muraleedharan is the sitting MP from the seat. While the party maintains its traditional vote bank, the nomination of the popular leader Shafi, who famed nationally during the 2019 elections by defeating the BJP’s E Sreedharan from the highly competitive Palakkad, would further bolster Congress’ hope.

Notably, the Congress MLA has campaigned tirelessly, determined to retain the party’s seat in the close contest. The massive reception that the Palakkad MLA enjoyed in Vadakara signals the youth Congress icon’s popularity, possibly capable of overcoming the challenges posed by the rival CPM candidate.

However, as surveys suggest unpredictable contest, thousands are eagerly waiting for the result.
