Akbaruddin Owaisi, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader and younger brother of party president Asaduddin Owaisi, is contesting from the Chandrayangutta Assembly constituency for sixth time in the current Telangana elections. One of of the 15 constituencies in Hyderabad region, Chandrayangutta assembly segment is known as an AIMIM stronghold.

In the election, sitting MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi faced BRS nominee M. Sitharam Reddy, Congress candidate Boya Nagesh Naresh, and BJP”s K Mahender. Akbaruddin Owaisi won from Chandrayangutta assebly constituency in five terms 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2018. He has also served as a deputy to his elder brother Asaduddin Owaisi, who was leading the AIMIM in the House and in 2004 he was elected as the floor leader of AIMIM in the Assembly. In 2009, he was re-elected and headed the seven-member party in the house. In 2019, he was appointed as the Chairman of Telangana Public Accounts Committee. In addition to his political activities, he is also the managing director of Owaisi hospital which was set up by his father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi.

Akbaruddin Owaisi is an orator and known for his rousing speeches before crowds, at the same time respected in the assembly for well-thought and articulate speeches. Besides his speeches, Akbaruddin Owaisi gains popularity, strength and support from the philanthropic work he and his party actively partake. He also engages in number of educational, welfare, and financial institutions in the capital city.

Akbaruddin Owaisi”s personal and political life is quite eventful. In 2011, an attempt at his life was made while he was travelling in Chandrayangutta. Citing Hate speech, he arrested and put in jail for 40 days in 2012, for conducting an inflammatory speech in the town of Nirmal. His infamous “15 Minutes Speech” received lots of flak for “anti-Hindu” remarks and for death threat against writers Salman Rushdie and Taslima Nasrin.

Recently, Akbaruddin Owaisi threatened a police inspector when he was asked to complete his rally in Hyderabad since it was violating Model Code of Conduct (MCC). “Do you think that after facing knives and bullets, I got weak, still there”s lots of courage in me. Five minutes are left and I”ll address five minutes, no one can stop me. If I give a signal then you”ll have to run, shall we make him run? This is what I”m saying they come like this to weaken us,” the AIMIM leader said.

Akbaruddin Owaisi and AIMIM leaders in general considered to be accessible to their people and voters. He gave due regard to his assembly segment and his several private welfare activities are focused on the region. Reportedly, Chandrayangutta known for having the most flyovers in Hyderabad. Though he keeps a distance from the Media, the AIMIM leader is quite in touch with his voters and the segment. While Telangana results announce on December 3, he is seeking nothing short of a sixth term.
