Asaduddin Owaisi is the the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and four time parliamentarian representing the Hyderabad constituency in Lok Sabha. He is known for his strong advocacy of minority issues, especially on matters concerning Muslims, regarding their rights, representation, and socio-economic advancement. As the 2024 General Elections is approaching, AIMIM chief is considering broadening party”s prospects in national politics by appealing to Muslim population and communities across India.
By putting AIMIM candidates in the fray for upcoming Telangana assembly election, Asaduddin Owaisi emphasised the importance of third front and regional party in politics. Presenting as a “friendly party” to ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and singing praises about KCR“s rule, he openly announced his favours are in which corner. He praises Telangana model of governance, and said: “Telangana model which is of peace, progress, prosperity, Muslim upliftment and communal amity, should be adopted by everyone. “In Telangana, AIMIM will contest nine seats, opposed to the eight it had contested in the 2018 assembly elections, and has seven MLAs in the outgoing Telangana assembly.
He disapproves other political parties, especially Congress. He vociferously attacks the grand old party for taking Muslim votes into their account without providing any benefits to the community in return. Congress in turn has been accusing AIMIM for indirectly helping BJP by contesting candidates across Muslim dominated constituencies in the country to create fissures on the anti-BJP vote bank. And after assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, Congress dubs Asaduddin Owaisi as a “vote-cutter”. Currently, AIMIM is placing candidates in Rajasthan as well. Congress in Telangana claims that BRS, AIMIM, and BJP are in cahoots.
As placing himself as the crusader for Muslim rights Asaduddin Owaisi hopes to draw Muslim electorates in his favour. Besides, AIMIM leader is open to fostering alliances and establishing connection with regional parties sharing similar politics and vision. By such partnerships, a broader coalition can be forged, and an alternative gathering a significant vote margin in the 2024 general elections can be formulated, he envisions.
Meanwhile, for his outstanding contribution and exceptional performance as a parliamentarian, he received the Best Parliamentarian of the Year Award in 2023. He was honoured with the title in 2013, 2014, 2019, and 2022 as well.
