BJP’s Dr. Palavi Harish Babu takes control of the Sirpur constituency from the INC and BRS forerunners. The constituency is one of the few where BJP candidates succeeded. The BJP candidate won the constituency by securing 63,702 votes but with a margin of only 3,088. The BRS candidate and current MLA Koneru Konappa came in second position with 60,614 votes. Third position was secured by the BSP candidate R.S. Praveen Kumar. The constituency witnessed a major shift in hold and changing winds in favour of the BJP.
Sirpur assembly constituency is one of the two constituencies in the Komaram Bheem District in Telangana. In 2018 assembly elections, Dr. Palavi Harish Babu of Indian National Congress (INC), was defeated by Koneru Konappa of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). In Sirpur constituency with a total elector of 1,91,131, the Koneru accumulated a vote of 83,088 followed by Dr. Palavi with 59,052. BJP’s Dr. Kottapelli Srinivas came third and earned 6,279 votes. The movement of Koneru from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to one of its major opponents, the TRS was a spotlighted event in the 2018 elections of Telangana.
Likely, in the 2014 assembly elections too, the Sirpur constituency was commanded by Koneru Konappa. From an electoral pool of 1,90,962, Koneru under the banner of BSP with 49,033 votes defeated the runner up TRS candidate Kaveti Sammaiah. Sammaiah had gathered 40,196 votes. Kaveti was followed by Kokkirala Prem Sagar Rao of INC with a total vote of 26,955.
Both in 2014 and 2018, the incumbent TRS, which later renamed Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) won the elections with majority seats and formed the government. Since 2014 K. Chandrashekhar Rao held the position of CM and led the party into consecutive victory under his leadership.
Based on the latest reports, out of the total 119 seats, INC succeeded in 56 seats. While BRS was in second with a lead of 32 seats. However, BJP is currently at the third position in the total seat share with only a lead of 7 seats. Along with Telangana, the Assembly elections were held in four other states including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. The results of these states except for Mizoram were announced on Sunday. Besides Telangana all other state election results were favourable to BJP.
