Virendra Chaudhary: Pharenda MLA Is Congress' Candidate In Maharajganj

Congress has fielded Virendra Chaudhary as the candidate for Uttar Pradesh“s Maharajganj constituency. He is fielded against sitting BJP MP Pankaj Chaudhary. During the last Lok Sabha elections, party”s current head of its social media department Supriya Srinate was Congress candidate.

Virendra Chaudhary is a legislator representing Pharenda assembly segment. After third consecutive losses, Congress leader won the constituency in the 2022 Assembly polls. In the assembly polls, he defeated BJP”s Bajrang Bahadur Singh by a margin of 4555 votes.

Maharajganj constituency comprises five assembly segments; Pharenda, Nautanwa, Siswa, Maharajganj (SC), and Paniyara. It is an unreserved seat. As incumbent MP Janardan Singh Sigriwal is seeking his next win from the constituency, Congress believes Virendra Chaudhary, a fresh face in Lok Sabha polls will be able to dent BJP leader”s hopes. Chaudhary represented the seat even before. He won the elections in 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2004.

In 2014 Lok Sabha election, Pankaj Chaudhary fielded against BSP candidate Kashi Nath Shukla and secured victory by a margin of 240458 votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Chaudhary contested against Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Akhilesh and won by a margin of 340424 votes. Meanwhile, Congress candidate Supriya Shrinate came distant third by receiving only 72,516 votes.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP swept Uttar Pradesh”s electoral field by securing 62 seats, and ally Apna Dal (S) garnered two seats. Mayawati”s BSP received 10 seats, while Akhilesh Yadav”s SP obtained five. Meanwhile, the grand old party could gather only one seat. Uttar Pradesh comprise 80 Lok Sabha constituencies and Maharajganj go to polls on June 1 (Phase 7).
