West Bengal Assembly Election 2026: RG Kar Rape Victim's Mother Ratna Debnath Leads, Leaving TMC Candidate Behind

The RG Kar Rape and murder Victim Mother Ratna Debnath is leading ahead on the BJP seat in the Panihati constituency, while Tirthankar Ghosh of AITC, son of the five-term sitting MLA, is leading behind with over 2100 votes.

Ratna Debnath is the mother of the postgraduate trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in 2024. Her campaign centered on the issues of women’s safety, judicial accountability, and the breakdown of law and order in Bengal.

Debnath said that she chose to fight the election for her daughter and for women whose security is under threat under the TMC government.

“Mamata Banerjee and her corrupt party leaders are responsible for my daughter’s death. People welcome me when I reach out for votes and assure me of their support. I lost my daughter, but I want to serve the people and help them. I may not be a doctor like her, but as a representative, I want to continue her mission,” she said.

Notably, the vote count is underway, and as per the ECI voting trends, BJP is leading ahead in West Bengal on 152 seats whil AITC is trailing on 81 seats.
