Censor Board Obstructing Dev Patel's Monkey Man Release By Not Holding A Screening For Review: Report

The revenge drama and the directorial debut of Oscar-nominated actor Dev Patel, Monkey Man, have been making waves across audiences for their action, intense performances, and wonderful storytelling. However, the film is yet to be released in the country where it’s set.

According to a report by The Hindu, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has “thwarted its release” without officially banning it by not scheduling a screening for its Examining Committee, its advisory panel. This comes despite Universal Studios toning down the film, cutting scenes that “sharply emphasised the nexus between religion and politics.”

Despite a Right To Information request by The Hindu, the CBFC’s Chief Executive Officer, Smita Vats Sharma, upheld the decision to withhold the details regarding the matter.

Initially set to release on April 19, Monkey Man hit theatres across the world on April 5. Produced by acclaimed director Jordan Peele, the film has also made its way on streaming platforms without the said scenes. Universal Studios has also reportedly changed the colour of the saffron political banners to red.
