Vijay Varma Mocks Gajendra Chauhan For 'Being Proud' Of Payal Kapadia's Win

Vijay Varma mocked Gajendra Chauhan for his comment about being proud of Payal Kapadia’s Cannes win.

Payal Kadippa has brought the country into the spotlight as she received the Grand Prix Award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her film “All We Imagine As Light”, and the filmmaker have brought international acclaim to the country, which no other filmmaker has ever done.

As she received loads of praise and appreciation for her determination and hard work as a filmmaker, Gajendra Chauhan, the former chairman of the Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) made his remarks as he said to PTI “Congratulations to her and I feel proud that I was the chairman at that time when she was doing the course there”

Reacting to his statement, the actor and the former student of FTII, Vijay Varma took to social media and reposted the news article that quoted him. The Murder Mubarak actor shared a GIF that reads, ‘Karwali Bezzati?’ (Got insulted?) and wrote on his post. “Sir ye chup rehne ka time tha.” (Sir this is the time to stay silent) with a giggle emoji.

Digging on to this interesting comment, the story dates back to 2015, when Payal Kapadia along with her batchmates was a part of the 139-day protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as FTII Chairman. The students boycotted classes and this resulted in disciplinary action against them. She was one of 35 students whose name was registered in a complaint by the then-FTII director Prashant Pathrabe for alleged forcible detention. She stopped attending classes in protest and had her scholarship taken away. Later, when her short film Afternoon Clouds made it to Cannes, FTII changed its mind and supported her. Payal Kapadia, along with her batchmates, was part of a 139-day protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairman.

But Gajendra in his interview with PTI stated “That protest was not against me, it was against the director and the administration”.
