After the remarkable achievement at the Cannes Film Festival, renowned filmmaker Payal Kapadia has now become a member of its prestigious international jury for the 78th edition of the festival. Payal won the prestigious Grand Prix for her debut feature, All We Imagine As Light, in 2024.

With Payal on board, the organisers of the Cannes Film Festival have put together a powerful jury that also includes actors Halle Berry and Jeremy Strong.

Creating a collective group of filmmakers and authors, the jury also comprises  South Korean filmmaker Hong Sangsoo, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, French-Moroccan writer Leila Slimani, as Congolese director, documentarist and producer Dieudo Hamadi, as well as Mexican filmmaker and producer Carlos Reygadas.

French actor Juliette Binoche will preside over the jury, succeeding Greta Gerwig, who handed out the Palme d’Or to Sean Baker’s Anora. Together, the jury will award the Palme d’Or to one of the 21 films in competition. According to the official Cannes Film Festival website, the winners will be announced on May 24 at the closing ceremony of the gala.

As a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Kapadia is no stranger to Cannes. Her journey began with her short film Afternoon Clouds in 2017 being featured at the Cannes La Cinefondation section, followed by her documentary A Night of Knowing Nothing, which won the L’Œil d’or (Golden Eye) for Best Documentary in 2021.

Payal Kapadia won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024 for her debut feature film All We Imagine As Light. The film, an ode to female friendship, womanhood, love and longing in Mumbai, became the first film from India to be part of the Cannes Competition after a 30-year gap.
