In a statement, Junaid said that he is humbled by the positive reviews that are coming his way. He said he is thrilled people are getting to watch his debut work.

“I cannot explain in words what I’m feeling right now. Maharaj has been a long and wild journey for me, but all’s well that ends well I guess. Maharaj was made with a lot of love and respect and passion and I’m glad that the film and my performance is striking a chord with audience at large,” he said, as quoted by media. He further added that he hopes he gets supportive casts and crew in all his future work.

Interestingly, neither Junaid, nor his famous father has promoted the film. The only thing that confirmed Junaid’s presence in the film was a poster which featured him and actor Jaideep Ahlawat.

The film is based on the 1862 Maharaj libel case, one of the few legal battles that had great impact in India’s history. The case has caused quite a controversy and became the landmark case in the record of Indian judiciary, and freedom of press in the country.

The Gujarat High Court pronounced stay order after a petition was filed by the followers of Vallabacharya of Pushtimarg sect, alleging that film is likely to evoke violence against the sect and Hindu religion.

Maharaj is helmed by Siddharth P Malhotra and has been produced under the banner of Yash Raj Films (YRF).
