Is Mohanlal’s Role In ‘Patriot’ Just A Cameo?
The much-awaited Malayalam biggie ‘Patriot‘ has found itself at the centre of online speculation, ranging from censorship concerns to questions about Mohanlal’s role in the film.
However, the makers have now stepped in to set the record straight, putting an end to circulating rumours.
Unverified reports recently claimed that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had asked the team to change the villain’s name in Patriot, allegedly because it resembled that of a prominent politician’s son.
The reports quickly gained traction online, raising concerns about possible last-minute changes ahead of the film’s May 1 release.
Responding to the controversy, producer Anto Joseph dismissed the claims, clarifying that while the CBFC did suggest a few minor modifications, they were routine and did not impact the core of the film.
He firmly denied that any demand was made to alter the villain’s name, calling such reports misleading.
Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, Patriot is already one of the most anticipated Malayalam films of the year, primarily because it marks the reunion of Mammootty and Mohanlal in substantial roles after years.
Naturally, this has led to another major question among fans—is Mohanlal’s role just a cameo?
Mohanlal plays Colonel Rahim Naik, a pivotal character in the narrative. This isn’t a cameo in the usual sense. It’s more of a crucial, high-impact role with limited but powerful screen time.

Far from being a brief appearance, his role is said to be crucial to the film’s progression. In fact, Mammootty himself has hinted that audiences will remember the character for its impact on the story, underlining that this is not a token presence but a significant performance.
The film features a massive ensemble cast including Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara, and Revathy. Backed by music from Sushin Shyam, the film promises a blend of scale, style, and strong storytelling.
Interestingly, Mahesh Narayanan has emphasised that Patriot was conceived as a script-driven film rather than a star vehicle. He noted that the idea of bringing Mohanlal and Mammootty together came later in the process, reinforcing that the narrative remains at the heart of the project.
