Kamal Haasan Meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Seeks Swift Recognition Of Keeladi’s Antiquity

Veteran actor nd founder of the political party MNM, Kamal Haasan, met the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, today in the national capital.

Describing the meeting as an honour, Kamal Haasan stated that he presented several key requests on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu with a special emphasis on the urgent need to expedite the official recognition of the antiquity of Keeladi, a significant archaeological site that has sparked renewed interest in the depth and sophistication of ancient Tamil civilisation.

In a heartfelt appeal, Kamal Haasan urged the Prime Minister to extend the central government’s support in elevating the cultural legacy of the Tamil people on the global stage.

He stressed the importance of showcasing the richness of Tamil heritage, the grandeur of its ancient urban settlements, and the timeless elegance of the Tamil language, one of the oldest living languages in the world

“Keeladi is not just an archaeological site; it is a mirror to our past, a symbol of Tamil brilliance, and a story waiting to be told to the world,” Haasan is understood to have said during the meeting.

Kamal Haasan, who has long been an advocate for Tamil identity and cultural preservation, noted that the findings from Keeladi—particularly the artefacts and inscriptions dating back to over 2,600 years- offer compelling evidence of a highly evolved, literate, and urban Tamil civilisation. He emphasised that it is time for India to give Keeladi the academic and institutional recognition it rightfully deserves.

This meeting comes at a time when there is growing public discourse around decentralising cultural narratives and giving equal space to Southern India’s rich and often underrepresented historical contributions.

In March,  Kamal Haasan, President of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), strongly voiced his concerns over the Centre’s growing interference in state affairs during an all-party meeting held in Chennai, convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The meeting focused on the implications of the upcoming delimitation exercise, which has drawn sharp criticism from several regional parties.

Addressing the gathering, He accused the central government of attempting to impose Hindi and northern-centric policies under the guise of delimitation.

He warned that the proposed restructuring of parliamentary constituencies would have far-reaching consequences for Tamil Nadu, as well as other southern and northeastern states, including Karnataka, Punjab, and the North-East.

Makkal Needhi Maiam (transl. Centre for People’s Justice), abbreviated as MNM, is a regional political party based in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Founded by Kamal Haasan on 21 February 2018 in Madurai, the party represents a vision for transparent governance, regional cooperation, and grassroots democracy.

At the launch, Kamal Haasan unveiled the party’s distinctive flag, symbolised by six interlocked hands, representing unity and cooperation among the five Southern states and one Union Territory.

The design reflects MNM’s ideology of regional solidarity and inclusive development. The party’s official election symbol is a battery torchlight, signifying clarity, truth, and the illumination of injustice.

Makkal Needhi Maiam has consistently positioned itself as a citizen-first party, committed to fighting corruption, ensuring accountability, and promoting social equity. As part of this effort, the party launched ‘Maiam Whistle’, a mobile whistleblower application that allows the public to report issues of corruption, abuse, or maladministration directly.
