Katha Innuvare Review: An Ode to Those Who Fall in Love

Kadha Innuvare, directed by Vishnu Mohan and starring Biju Menon, Methil Devika, Nikhila Vimal, Anusree, Hakim Shajahan, Anu Mohan, Renji Panicker, and Siddique, is an ode to all those who have experienced love and possibly faced heartbreak. Kadha Innuvare consists of four parallel love stories, each featuring characters from different generations and social backgrounds. Though these stories are not interconnected (but, there is a catch in the climax), they offer a deep exploration of the realities faced by those who win and lose in love.

The film’s narrative revolves around the search for love, with some characters finding happiness, while others meet tragic ends. Among the stories are a teenager who falls for his classmate, a local politician who falls for a college girl, a beverage shop employee who loves a prostitute, and a government officer who develops feelings for her office assistant. Each tale reflects different aspects of love, forming the core of Kadha Innuvare.

Methil Devika, a celebrated dancer, makes her much-awaited debut, showcasing her acting talent in the role of a long-widowed government officer. She proves herself to be a promising actress in character roles. The performances of Biju Menon, Nikhila Vimal, Anusree, Hakim Shajahan, and Anu Mohan are also commendable.

The film’s music by Ashwin Arya complements the romantic themes, while Jomon T John’s cinematography enhances the mood of the love stories. However, the editing by Shameer Muhammed leaves room for improvement. The frequent transitions between stories lack coherence, often leaving the audience confused due to a lack of proper continuity.

While Katha Innuvare predominantly explores love, it also raises serious questions about religion and belief systems when its protagonists face failure. The film critiques various religions equally, adding depth to its narrative.

The climax contains a twist that raises questions but may leave some viewers feeling that the writer, who is also the director, chose an easy conclusion to make the screenplay more impactful. Despite this, the film offers a well-rounded script filled with emotions, tragedy, humour, and hope.

Timeline Verdict: Kadha Innuvare is a commendable attempt to create a heartfelt romantic film. With a more refined edit and screenplay, it could have been a masterpiece from the ever-evolving Malayalam industry.
