As the medical debate in social media between the popularly known Liver Doc and actress Nayanthara has been heating up with back to back call outs over the Hibiscus tea issue, the Liver Doc called the celebrity Nutritionist Ms. Munmum Ganeriwal “a quack” over her claim on the explanation on sharing the benefits of the Hibiscus tea.

So, what’s this Hibiscus tea issue?

Actress Nayanthara on her Instagram page recently introduced Hibiscus tea, curated by her celebrity nutritionist Munmum Ganeriwal, and lined its benefits stating “It is high in antioxidants and is helpful in diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart-related ailments. It is very cooling for the system hence it is great for those with acne, heat boils on the skin, etc. It has antibacterial effects that protect from seasonal infection/ illness”.

And over the actress’s claim, a Hepatologist Cyriac Abby Philips, popularly known as his social media handle Liver Doc debunked the claims of actress Nayanthara over sharing the benefits of Hibiscus tea as he penned down a long description stating that it is “Unproven” and “Inacurate” and also added, “There are no studies to prove that hibiscus tea prevents acne or is antibacterial or prevents seasonal infections in humans.”

In reacting to this accusation, the actress on her Instagram story shared the post of the celebrity Nutritionist Munmum Ganeriwal, where the nutritionist mentioned the difference between the two flowers Hibiscus Sabdariffa and Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis and made sure that her tea is referring to Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis, which can be seen commonly seen at Indian home gardens. Notably, the Nutritionist also mentioned the research papers along with her post.

And the debate doesn’t end there, as a reply to the post,  Liver Doc shared the screengrab of Nayanthara’s post on X, and tweeted, “Hopeless. Just hopeless. Still not taking any responsibility for misguidance and promoting the pseudoscience-peddling nutritionist. Quite a sad state of awareness on healthcare here.”

He also again tweeted mentioning Ms.Munmum Ganeriwal as a “quack” stating “1/8 Ok, so after the actress Nayantara indirectly “abused” me and silently deleted her post on hibiscus tea benefits, her “celebrity nutritionist” Ms. Munmum Ganeriwal, whom I called a “quack” has responded strongly against me…proving that she is indeed a “quack.”

The Liver Doc claimed that the journals cited by Ganeriwal to back her claims were “embarrassing”, and called one of them “garbage, predatory, pay and publish, non-indexed, non-peer reviewed toilet paper,” and slammed the other as a “dubious 3rd-rate, non-indexed, scientific database unlisted toilet paper.”

The hepatologist previously also criticized actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who had promoted alternative medicine therapy for treating respiratory viral infections.
