'Mass Entertainer But Lacks Suspense And Originality': Baby John Reviews

As the Varun Dhawan-Keerthy Suresh starrer Baby John hit the theatres on December 25, reviews have begun to pour out. The movie, directed by Kalees, presents Dhawan as the fearless DCP Satya Verma while the South Indian actress Keerthy Suresh makes her Bollywood debut as the hero’s devoted wife, Meera. Jackie Shroff and Rajpal Yadav come in pivotal roles.

According to reviews, the film has been called a mass thriller entertainer and rollercoaster of action, while the performance Varun Dhawan has been hailed by many filmgoers on X platform. The Bollywood icon Salman Khan’s cameo has arguably added fire, with reviewers on the X platform have called the star-studded appearance of Salman Khan a goosebumps moment in the movie.

Reviewing the movie, media house The Indian Express opined that the lead actor Varun Dhawan is unfit for such kinds of films, adding that though the camera can help him do the slo-mo swagger thing, his delivery is fit only for low-fi comedies.

The media house observed that the comic’s dialogue gets more taalis than the hero’s ‘taqia kalaam’ line. The reviewer of the news portal went to the extent of saying that Baby John bids fair to claim the title of the worst film of 2024. “Baby John can try all he might, but even an aging Bhai Jaan ups the ante,” the Indian Express review notes.

Suggesting the anticipated plot, the review further pointed out that all those plots were just an excuse to get hero into his stride and pulverize the baddies, using guns, swords, fists, or anything that can turn into a weapon. There were also several violent scenes, such as humans being carved, burnt, and trampled; body parts were strewn about, and blood spurts, which the news portal described as an ugliness on display.

However, there are several media houses that praised the cast’s performance, including lead actors such as Varun Dhawan and Keerthy Suresh. News 18, while calling the hero’s performance impressive, remarked that the heroine stole the show with her outstanding Bollywood debut. “From portraying fearlessness to vulnerability and humor, Dhawan proves he is a complete package. His high-energy performance in the peppy track Nain Matakka is particularly noteworthy,” the news portal opined.

Talking about the heroine, it said that the actress’ presence was the highlight of the movie. Her nuanced dialogue delivery and expressive acting make her a scene-stealer, as per the reviewer of the media house. However, it also pointed out that the film faltered in its writing and direction while noting that the plot felt stretched, with a sluggish first half that echoes Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore. “Although the second half gains momentum, it remains predictable, lacking suspense or originality,” it reviewed.
