Indian actress and model Mehreen Pirzada on Tuesday took to her social media and condemned trolls and criticisms characterizing a marital rape scene from her debut web series as a “sex scene”. The mentioned scene is from her recent Disney Hotstar streamed season 1 of action-thriller Sultan of Delhi, directed by Milan Luthria. The season which elaborates to nine episodes is a retelling of the 2016 book Sultan of Delhi: Ascension by Arnab Ray, in which the author draws an explosive saga of ambition, greed, love, and passion.

Ms Pirzada criticized the mainstream media and social media for trolls and mis-description of marital rape as sex-scene. As she mentioned on her X (formerly Twitter) post, the scene depicted a “brutal Marital Rape”, but many have described it in the wrong manner and accused such attitudes minimalizes the importance of dealing serious issues which women encounters in the current world.

She asserted that only a particular section of the media took the scene in a misleading manner and “these people should understand that they have sisters and daughters too”. “I pray to god they never have to go through such trauma in their own lives as just the thought of such brutality and violence against women is repugnant”, she added.

First episode of the series was released on October 13. The actress also explained that as a professional actor she has to do some actions, if the script demands, against her morals. She values acting as a job and at the same time an art and accept the fact that one has to do certain scenes which “are not palatable if they are part of the story’s narrative”.

The actress expressed her confidence that what she did was in justice to the character of the series. According to her, the team behind Sultan of Delhi was also extremely professional and made sure that any actors at no point were “uncomfortable and exposed”.

Ms Pirzada, who predominantly appears in languages of Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Punjabi films made her acting debut in 2016 with the Telugu film Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha.
