Internet is divided over Rani Mukherji’s comment over “India makes the best films in the world”. During a discussion on Mega Pan India Round Table discussion, the Bollywood star strongly vouched that India makes the best films in the world. Her remarks came as a response to Kannada film maker, Prithvi Konanur’s comment.

The maker of Seventeeners said that there is a “slight disconnect between the audience and OTT platforms”, as the OTT platforms now goes for only big budget movies, and not very much in favour of off-beat movies. The filmmaker known making low-budget realistic movies, said the basic idea of film making is going to the streets and hunting for the suitable talents apt for the rules. He went on to said that was the reason he asks people to watch Iranian films, and said that there is a vast difference between Iranian films and Indian films. He opined that India is far behind Iranian movies in terms of ideas. And for that Indian film makers should go to the roots rather than going up.

To the remarks from the maker of Railway Children, Rani Mukherji said she is a little “offended” over him asking that “we should learn from other people”, because she believes that “Indian cinemas is the best in the world”. She then cited 12th Fail, a film by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, a film made from roots. She said the movie represents India, as it talks about the struggles of India. She said she don’t believe film making is only about making the movies in a certain way, and added that Indian films are an “amalgamation” of commercial, festival, mid-level films, high-level films, and every other kind of films. According to Rani Mukherjee, India makes the most diverse films.

Reacting to this, one X (formerly twitter) user said that 12th Fail is “such a poor example especially when he said that they are exploring new ideas. There are 100s of underdog movies in every language at this point. Not that explored anything specific indian like caste etc”.

Another one asked What is wrong with “looking brown”, as people think they are “changing something but you know what..you are again enforcing the notion that being brown = poor”. Another user said that Rani Mukherji has a “superiority complex. She thinks what she feels is the ultimate truth. Non sense”.

A user named Tarun could not believe the “absolute audacity” to say India “make the most “grounded” films. Unreal levels of delusion”.

Apart from Prithvi Konanur and Rani Mukherji, Karan Johar, Jude Anthany, Taapsee Pannu, Rima Das and Sandeep Reddy Vanga attended the round table discussion.
