Prithviraj’s ‘Vilayath Buddha’ Hits Theatres Today

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s long-delayed film Vilayath Buddha finally reached theatres on Friday, bringing to a close a project that has been talked about, paused, revived, and reshaped for years.

The film, based on G. R. Indugopan’s acclaimed novel of the same name, marks the directorial debut of Jayan Nambiar and carries the emotional imprint of the late filmmaker Sachy, who had originally planned to adapt the book.

The story unfolds in Marayur, where a single sandalwood tree, nicknamed the “Vilayath Buddha”, becomes the centre of a brewing conflict between Double Mohanan (played by Prithviraj) and his former mentor Bhaskaran Master, portrayed by Shammi Thilakan.

The trailer, released weeks ahead of the premiere, had already set the tone for a tense, atmospheric drama. Viewers were drawn to its rugged visuals, muted colour palette, and the forest-heavy frames crafted by cinematographer Arvind S. Kashyap.

Jakes Bejoy’s music, especially the background score used in the trailer, added to the anticipation with its earthy, percussive notes.

The supporting roster includes Priyamvada Krishnan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Anu Mohan, who plays the character Ani, along with Rajashree and Tamil actor Teejay Arunasalam, who appears as the antagonist Maari.

But getting the film made was anything but easy. Production began in 2022 and hit an unexpected roadblock when Prithviraj suffered a major ligament injury during an action sequence in Marayur.

The shoot halted for months while he recovered, forcing the team to rework schedules, locations, and portions of the script. The film eventually wrapped in early 2025.

Backed by Sandip Senan’s Urvasi Theatres and AVA Productions, Vilayath Buddha opened today to strong occupancy in Kerala.
