Refrain From Linking Netaji's Name With Savarkar: Subhash Chandra Bose’ Grandnephew To Randeep Hooda

Activist, commentator and grandnephew of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Chandra Kumar Bose has asked the makers of upcoming Bollywood release “Swatantrya Veer Savarkar” to refrain from linking Netaji”s name with Savarkar. The trailer of the movie directed and helmed by actor Randeep Hooda has mentions of the Indian freedom fighter meeting the controversial Hindutva ideologue. Chandra Kumar Bose has also said Netaji was an inclusive, secular leader and patriot, and it is important to project the true personality of the founder of Indian National Army.

“Randeep Hooda, appreciate your making a film on “Savarkar”, but it’s important to project the true personality! Please refrain from linking “Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose”s” name with Savarkar. Netaji was an inclusive secular leader and patriot of patriots,” Chandra Kumar Bose wrote on X after tagging the actor.

The trailer shows a conversation between Savarkar and Netaji. “Use the modern weapons from Germany and japan to attack the British forces,” Savarkar is seen telling Netaji.

Chandra Kumar Bose has also shared a comment by a Netaji enthusiast, Sumeru Roy Chaudhury, who wrote this: “Netaji didn”t go for any sort of compromise with the British imperialist. In contrast, Savarkar was a mercy-petition-wala, and is widely known for that, accepting stipends from the British colonialists. Subhas equated Savarkar with Jinnah”.

The trailer also mentions and shows snippets from alleged interactions with Mahatma Gandhi and their conversations on Ahimsa-based endeavours to attain India’s freedom, about which the Hindutva ideologue was against.

According to reports, the Bollywood actor, who was signed as the protagonist to play Vinayak Damodar Savarkar took over the direction of the film from famous Bollywood Mahesh Manjrekar. Reportedly, Mr Manjrekar quit the project citing differences with Mr Hooda over the script and inclusion of irrelevant historical figures and events.
