Rima Kallingal’s Theatre: The Myth Of Reality Hits Theatres Today

After making waves on the international film festival circuit, Theatre: The Myth of Reality finally arrives in theatres across Kerala today. Written and directed by Sajin Baabu, this Malayalam-language mystery drama stars Rima Kallingal and Sarasa Balussery in the lead roles and explores the fragile boundary between myth and reality, set against the mystical and fading traditions of Kerala.

Produced by Anjana Philip and Philip Zacharia under the banner Anjana Talkies, with Santhosh Kottayi as co-producer, the film marks Sajin Baabu’s return to deeply philosophical storytelling following his acclaimed work in Biriyaani.

Theatre: The Myth of Reality delves into how collective belief and personal perception shape truth. Through the intertwined lives of its protagonists, the film reflects on faith, illusion, and the eternal search for meaning — bringing alive the theatre of human existence itself.

Shot across rural Kerala, the film is visually rich, courtesy of Syamaprakash M. S., whose cinematography captures both the realism of everyday life and the poetic surrealism of myth.

The film had its world premiere on 9 October 2025 at the Eurasian Bridge International Film Festival, Yalta, where it received critical appreciation for its layered narrative and stunning visuals.

Earlier this year, Theatre won two Kerala Film Critics Association Awards — Best Actress for Rima Kallingal and a Special Jury Award for Pramod Veliyanad.

Music and background score by Saeed Abbas add spiritual resonance to the film’s mood. The soundtrack album, released under Muzik 247, features a single, atmospheric track titled “Mudiyaattupaattu”, written and sung by Adwaith B. Kumar — a brief yet evocative piece that complements the film’s introspective tone.

The film’s trailer, first unveiled at the Marché du Film on May 13, 2025, and later released online on October 3, 2025, garnered attention for its enigmatic visuals and haunting tone.

Ahead of the release, the makers launched a powerful campaign titled #UnwrittenByHer, celebrating women who have broken barriers and shaped their own paths. The event, held in Thiruvananthapuram, featured Minister Saji Cherian as the chief guest.

The film boasts a strong ensemble including Dain Davis, Pramod Veliyanad, Krishnan Balakrishnan, Mekha Rajan, Ann Saleem, Balaji Sarma, Akhil Kavalayoor, Meenakshi Raveendran, and Ashwathy B., among others — each contributing to the layered tapestry of characters that make up this metaphysical mystery.
