As the Hema Committee report’s revelations sent shockwaves withing the Malayalam film industry, resulting in the disbandment of the AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), a group of filmmakers proposed the formation of a new association with the aim to create a fair and equitable workspace. A group of filmmakers have come together for the reformation of the Malayalam film industry through the establishment of an association named the ‘Progressive Filmmakers Association.’

The proposal for this new organisation was initiated with an open letter by notable filmmakers Aashiq Abu, Anjali Menon, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Rajeev Ravi, Rima Kallingal, and Binesh Chandra.
Emphasizing the need for systematic modernization and worker empowerment, the letter read, “It is time to bring a change in the Malayalam film industry, according to the modern systems, legal frameworks and collective responsibility. Rooted in the values of equality, cooperation and social justice, the organization will ensure that the rights of employees and the producers are protected and help the industry to grow.”

Urging Mollywood personalities to join the force together, it said, “Let us join together to create a better future for the industry where everyone can work together with compassion.” The note also defined its vision to build a community that provides complementary tools, frameworks, guidelines, and support to carry out these responsibilities.
The Justice Hema Committee report unveiled the true face of Mollywood and has sent shock waves in the Indian film industry. With sexual assault allegations thrown over the big heads of the industry, the report created a significant impact on the film association within the Malayalam film industry.
Following a tide of allegations against several prominent actors, Mohanlal, the then president of AMMA resigned from his presidential post and disbanded the association on August 27 after by the mass resignation of its 17 executive members.
