As per producer Allu Aravind, Thandel was written and directed by Chandoo Mondeti, was actually inspired by a real-life experience of fishermen who accidentally crossed the Pakistan border. Initially introduced by Bunny Vasu, the story was later developed by Chandoo Mondeti in a period of nine months.
