As per producer Allu Aravind, Thandel was written and directed by Chandoo Mondeti, was actually inspired by a real-life experience of fishermen who accidentally crossed the Pakistan border. Initially introduced by Bunny Vasu, the story was later developed by Chandoo Mondeti in a period of nine months.

As per the producer Allu Aravind, Thandel is one of the highest-budget films of Naga Chaitanya’s career, and he has great hope for this film. Even though Allu Aravind didn’t disclose details, reports claim that the film was made with a budget of Rs 75 crore.
