Tiger 3 Review: Salman Khan – Katrina Kaif – Emran Hashmi Movie Has Lots Of Good Elements (And Some Bad Too)

Before I get into the details of Tiger 3, there is an advice for Yash Raj Films: The long you limit your spy universe to South Asia and West Asia, the interest in your movies will die soon. Because, the enemy always looks the same in your movies, in all of the five Yash Raj Films Spy Universe. You want a clue? Check all the names from the villains list. If its about our country and its enemies (your movies are always about that nationalistic thing), look at our other borders as well. Or, send your writers to a university where they teach bilateral relations, especially where the old syllabus and the new political scenarios are being taught.

Back to Tiger 3.

Why I feel like that I have seen all the settings of this movie somewhere else? Yes. What the makers, in fact, put together is everything and everyone from Tiger Zinda Hai, Ek Tha Tiger, War and Pathaan to a personal matter of Tiger and Zoya, and burnt Rs 300 crore in VFX and several mountains. I know, the box office performance will be different for a Salman Khan potboiler. It feels like a damp squib for me because Tiger 3 is never giving the audience anything new (some exceptions are there, still).

However, as a matter of fact, there are some new and unexpected presentations in Tiger 3.

[Spoiler alert]

One – Shah Rukh Khan. No, the effervescent Pathaan. The theatre I was present (also the audience who were put to Kumbhakarna sleep by Shridhar Raghavan”s screenplay and Aditya Chopra”s story) came back to life when a certain music being played. Then appeared Pathaan on screen with fireworks. Then both the heroes are seen engaging in a never before daredevilry in which a bridge, a helicopter and several enemy (you must have understood by now who the enemy is) soldiers being ambushed.

Shah Rukh’s show off (Tiger’s word, not mine) doesn’t end there. The banter is good. @Aditya Chopra: could you please make a movie with both the actors speaking, just speaking. You will quadruple the investment.

The swag is different level then when they speak silly things while being attacked. During the conversations (obviously in between as they destroy the whole army infrastructure somewhere near a Pakistan jail. Don’t ask which jail keeps such a backup. Oh. I forgot to tell you. For certain movies, I keep my brain outside before I enter the theatre.) they become Jai-Veeru and at one point of time Tiger praises Pathaan’s hair and says “long hair suits you very much”.

Two – Katrina Kaif. All the hype created about her fights and physical fitness (remember, she had dropped a video some days ago about her fitness) was true. She can do good fight scenes, strikingly, the much talked about towel fight scene with Michelle Lee is a never seen before one. The family scenes seem like not her cup of tea. The first half was mostly ruined by such scenes. Lesson here: From a spy movie, the viewer wouldn’t expect the overabundance of family drama.

Three – Emran Hashmi as the villain. He is cold. He is a villain material as ex- ISI agent Aatish Rehman. He is as not macho as Jim of Pathaan (for that we have Bhai here, fans may say). But, his traverses for bitter-cold revenge for his partner and unborn baby take the movie to a little bit cinematic and give it wings.

Four – The globetrotting. Yes. The movie, like Pathaan, travels to various locales. Australia, Turkey, Russia and Madh Island. Some visual are breath taking.

Apart from these, the movie is like a whole Diwali is brought into the theatres – full of fireworks, and at the end hero and heroine survive without a mark of injury. They survive a full-blown battle in Pakistan prime minister’s residence, that too versus the might of Pakistan army!!!

Movie’s messages are clear: Pakistan can survive with democracy and the moment it turns to the whims of ISI, it will be destroyed. The movie declares that a RAW+ISI couple can help Pakistan establish democracy.

Salman Khan’s Schmaltz is boring. Watch the movie at your own risk.
