Dhadak 2, released in theatres today, marks a significant departure from the glossy, sanitised romanticism of its 2018 predecessor. Helmed by debutant director Shazia Iqbal, the film is not just a sequel in name, it’s a searing reimagining of what a love story can dare to become in the shadow of India’s deeply entrenched caste hierarchies.

Inspired by Mari Selvaraj’s hard-hitting Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal, Dhadak 2 brings together artistry, politics, and emotion.

Set between a small town in Madhya Pradesh and the academic corridors of a university in Mumbai, Dhadak 2 tells the story of Neelesh (Siddhant Chaturvedi), a Dalit law student navigating both his identity and his place in a world that routinely refuses him dignity.

Enter Vidhi (Triptii Dimri), an upper-caste, English-speaking political science student, who sees in Neelesh both vulnerability and strength—and eventually, love.

What begins as a tentative friendship blossoms into a romance that is as tender as it is doomed. But Iqbal refuses to romanticise oppression. Instead, she pushes the viewer to confront the real cost of love when caste is the unspoken third character in every scene.

The film’s soundtrack, curated by a team of composers—Rochak Kohli, Tanishk Bagchi, Javed–Mohsin, Hesham Abdul Wahab, and Shreyas Puranik- enhances rather than interrupts the narrative. The standout track, “Duniya Alag”, rendered hauntingly by Arijit Singh, captures the internal divide between belonging and alienation.

Another notable number, “Bas Ek Dhadak,” sung soulfully by Shreya Ghoshal and Jubin Nautiyal, serves as a motif for the heartbeat that connects Neelesh and Vidhi across caste, class, and chaos.

Dhadak 2 began pre-production in April 2023, with Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi leading the cast under the production of Karan Johar. The film’s official announcement was made on 15 May 2025, introducing the characters of Dimri and Chaturvedi in a musical teaser.

The film was initially scheduled for a theatrical release on 22 November 2024, but it was postponed multiple times—first to 21 February 2025, and then to 1 August 2025. All previous release dates were missed due to various delays, including issues related to CBFC clearance.
