AR Murugadoss’ Madharaasi Gets A Lukewarm Start: Action Works, Story Falls Flat

Sivakarthikeyan’s highly anticipated action-thriller Madharaasi, directed by A R Murugadoss, hit theatres worldwide today, September 5, 2025.

Mounted on a massive budget of ₹200 crore, the psychological action drama also stars Rukmini Vasanth, Vidyut Jammwal, Biju Menon, Vikranth, and Shabeer Kallarakkal in pivotal roles.

With music by Anirudh Ravichander, the film marks the much-awaited collaboration between Sivakarthikeyan and ace filmmaker Murugadoss.

The movie follows the story of Raghu (played by Sivakarthikeyan), an ordinary man whose fractured mind turns him into a violent force when he gets entangled with a powerful gun-smuggling syndicate. Now, let’s take a look at what social media is saying about Sivakarthikeyan’s big release Madharaasi.

One of the early viewers described Madharaasi as “a high-octane action thriller in trademark Murugadoss style.” According to the response, the prologue worked well, and the film gradually set up its characters, leading to a fiery interval block.

Sivakarthikeyan’s characterisation was highlighted as unique, while the romantic portions were seen as passable. Rukmini Vasanth and the supporting cast were noted to have performed their roles effectively.

The second half, the viewer said, was packed with back-to-back action sequences and impressive stunt set-pieces, though their extended length was cited as the film’s main drawback. The narration, they felt, could have been stronger.

Overall, the verdict from this perspective was that Madharaasi is a “decent entertainer,” with a rating of 3.25 out of 5.

Another moviegoer, posting under the hashtag #MadharaasiReview, was far less impressed, giving the film a 2.5 out of 5 rating. The viewer expressed disappointment with director A. R. Murugadoss, noting, “I was blown away by his work in 7th Sense, but this feels like dull work from him.”

The reaction labelled the film a “disaster overall,” with criticism aimed at the average music—particularly the Hindi dubbing of the song Salambala—and Sivakarthikeyan’s performance, which they felt was “totally misfit in that character.”

Another viewer felt the film lacked an emotional core, commenting that “somewhere the base didn’t connect emotionally.” They described the narrative as moving flatly and noted that the film was “too loud at times, with guns blazing all around.”

While they acknowledged Sivakarthikeyan and Vidyut Jammwal as positives, they believed both deserved stronger writing. On the other hand, Anirudh Ravichander’s background score was called a minus. The overall technical aspects were described as decent.

Another moviegoer slammed Madharaasi as “a dull and predictable movie with a weak script and uneven tone”, though they acknowledged Vidyut Jammwal’s earnest performance. They felt the narrative was uninspired, repetitive, and lacked originality.

Sivakarthikeyan’s acting was described as artificial, particularly in the romance portions with Rukmini Vasanth, which the viewer found “horrible.” They also pointed out that while A.R. Murugadoss had hyped the film in interviews as being on the scale of Ghajini, the output felt closer to Sikandar 2.

The criticism extended to Anirudh Ravichander’s music and background score, which the user felt were “as bad as the screenplay.” Calling Murugadoss the “main culprit,” they complained that his storytelling was so dull that “most of the audience were sleeping in the second half.”

Taking to the X platform, another reviewer wrote: “It’s a below-average attempt with a weak screenplay, flat performances, and forgettable moments. Watch only if you have free time.”
