From Americano To Mexicano: A Form Of Mexican Resilience Against US Policies

Mexico: Reactions to oppressive policies can take multiple forms. Several moves by the people against the decisions they consider wrong and unjust have turned out to be iconic resilient manifestations in the world. One such defensive – for some hilarious – move was the renaming of Americano coffee to the Mexicano.

In an act of rebellion against several US policies, many cafés and shops in Mexico are rebranding traditional Americano to Mexicano. The traditional Americano, a shot of espresso with added hot water, is a popular drink, especially in the United States, neighboring countries and many parts of the world.

Media house CNN reported that many shop owners have given the freedom to their staffs to rename popular Americano as Mexicano. Many in the US’ southern neighboring country are frustrated by the various US policies they believe are unjust. Recently, Scarlett Lindeman, owner of Café Cicatriz, expressed support for the name change to the drink, stating “words really carry power.”

The Mexico is having a difficult relationship with the US amid rising tensions regarding Trump’s  crackdown on immigration and criminalisation of the undocumented migrants.

The idea is not new, though. Last month, cafes across Canada renamed the Americano  to Canadiano, in protest against the US  initiation of a tariff war against its northern neighbour.
