Experts say that standing while eating can cause the risk of cancer and intestinal cancer. It is said that diseases esophagus could potentially develop from certain dietary habits. Dr Rakesh Kapoor from Post Graduate Institute of Chandigarh said that eating and drinking while standing could lead to various difficulties like acid reflux, as it prevents the muscles of the esophagus from functioning properly.

Experts revealed about the information during the second foundation day of the radiotherapy department at the Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute. “This dysfunction increases the risk of esophageal cancer and eating standing position disrupts normal digestive process, requiring more efforts from the intestines and elevating the risk of colorectal cancer”, said Mr. Kapoor.

Vice Chancellor at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Soniya Nityanand shared information about trial of new technique abroad which showed promise in eliminating small tumors with high-dose radiation.

According to Dr Sharad Singh, Head of radiotherapy department at the Cancer Institute, delayed marriages and smoking were contributing largely in the rising cancer rate. “Women are postponing marriage to pursue careers, leading to increased cases of breast cancer given rise to by delayed planning of children and reduced breastfeeding”, he said.

Breast cancer is very common in India. With a prevalence rate of 25.8 cases per 100,000 people, in 2020, it was accounted that 13,6 percent of all new cancer cases and roughly 13.3 fatalities per 100,000 people are due breast cancer. In 2020 alone, an estimated amount of 2.3 million cases of breast cancer were reported, which accounted for 11.7 percent of all cancer cases. Currently, breast cancer account for 28.2 percent of all female cancers in India.
