Inexplicable Pain: Pune Doctors Find Forgotten Stent In Man's Stomach Placed During 2022 Surgery

Doctors in Pune discovered a forgotten stent in a 73-year-old man after he later complained of inexplicable stomach pains and nausea, nearly for a year. The man had undergone surgery in 2022, during which the doctors placed a stent in the stomach, leading to the patient’s ache later. The stent was inserted to drain bile for a surgery called endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. The procedure is done to fix issues in the pancreatic ducts, liver, and gallbladder.

Notably, after the surgery, the doctors reportedly told the man to come back six weeks later to remove the stent in the stomach. The patient, however, does never arrive at the hospital, and the stent stayed in his body for two years, according to the chief surgeon at Mhaske Hospital, Dr. Chetan Mhaske. Mhaske performed the surgery to remove the stent from the man’s stomach in September this year.

The doctors found out the stent after the man started to complain of stomach pain, bloating, and fever a year after the surgery. After checking all potential reasons for the pain, they performed an ultrasound and discovered the stent inside. The doctor told me that the patient had completely forgotten the follow-up of his surgery, leading to the complications.

According to the assistant surgeon, Dr. Anup Kamble, the stent could have been removed non-surgically through endoscopy if the patient had followed the doctor’s instructions. “But because it had been left in there for such a long time, stones developed in the bile duct. So we had to surgically intervene through laparoscopy,” the Times of India quoted the doctor.
