At least 18 people were killed and several injured after a Delhi-bound bus collided with another vehicle on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao on Wednesday morning.

Travelling from Sitamarhi in Bihar to Delhi, the double-decker, carrying roughly 57 passengers, hit the milk container from behind on the expressway. Three women and one child were among those killed, said the police.

The police reached the spot and rescued the injured, who were rushed to the Community Health Centre in Bangarmu. Six people have been referred to the Trauma Centre.

Reportedly, the impact of the collision was such that people were flung out of the vehicle.

Gaurang Rathi, District Magistrate, Unnao, said that the accident occurred around 5:15 a.m. “18 people lost their lives, and 19 others were injured in the accident,” Rathi added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the accident. An amount of Rs 50,000 has been announced for the injured.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and directed the district administration officials to speed up the relief efforts.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished for a speedy recovery for the injured. Kharge also appealed to all INDIA party workers to provide help to the victims.
