The police in Navi Mumbai have registered a case against a 29-year-old man for marrying a 12-year-old girl, repeatedly sexually assaulting her and making her pregnant, an official said on Friday.
Child marriage is banned in the country as per the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. The couple was from Satara district of Maharashtra.
During a survey on Thursday, a local doctor from Panvel noticed that the minor girl was four months pregnant. He then later alerted the police.
The station house officer of Khandeshwar police station immediately filed case against the accused. The accused is charged case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
Similar incident was reported in Yamunanagar district of Haryana. The police has registered case against two males for allegedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old. The girl”s step father and brother-in-law are the accused. The minor has given birth to a baby girl. According to the police, the accused were arrested on Wednesday and was brought before the court and are now under judicial custody. The suspects built up a story about how they found a new born baby abandoned along the river side and wanted to adopt her. The police unable to believe the version, launched an investigation which eventually led to the discovery of the bitter truth, reports Economic Times.
