In a surprising move, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Leader and senior Delhi minister Kailash Gahlot has resigned from the party. A setback to the AAP ahead of the 2025 assembly polls in the capital city, the resignation of the long-term party leader is observed to be a blow to the ruling party’s electoral prospects. Gahlot was handling key departments, including Home, Transport, IT, and Women and Child Development, in the AAP-led Delhi government.
Informing his decision to quit the party, Gahlot wrote a resignation letter to the party national supremo, Arvind Kejriwal, stating that he found himself left with no option but to step away from the party and that he resign from “primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party.” The former AAP leader is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), media house NDTV reported, citing sources.
Gahlot cited the party’s fighting for political agenda instead of the people for his decision to leave the party. “It is now obvious that real progress for Delhi cannot happen if the Delhi government spends the majority of its time fighting with the Centre,” he said.

In his resignation letter, Gahlot also expressed dissatisfaction over the party’s inability to deliver promises made to the people of Delhi. Gahlot noted the failure to clean the Yamuna River. “We promised the people a cleaner Yamuna, but we have failed to deliver on that commitment,” he pointed out.
“There are many embarrassing and awkward controversies like the ‘Sheeshmahal,’ which are now making everyone doubt whether we still believe in being the Aam Aadmi,” Gahlot penned, referring to the controversy surrounding Arvind Kejriwal’s new official bungalow.

“I had started my political journey with the commitment to serve the people of Delhi, and I want to continue doing that. Which is why I find myself left with no option but to step away from AAP, and hence I resign from primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party,” Gahlot concluded.
