After allegedly trying to escape from police custody, a prime accused in a minor girl’s gangrape in Assam’s Nagaon district died on Saturday morning. The 24-year-old suspect was one of the three accused in the gangrape of a 14-year-old girl that occurred in the Dhing area on Thursday. He was arrested on Friday under sections of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the POCSO Act.

According to Nagaon Superintendent of Police Swapneel Deka, the suspect was taken to the crime scene around 3:30 am for a re-creation of the act while being handcuffed. The police claimed that the accused jumped into a pond and died.

“The accused hit out at a policeman, escaped from police custody, and jumped into the pond.” The print quoted Nagaon Superintendent of Police, adding that that disaster response team was immediately informed and a search operation was launched. Nearly two hours after the search, the dead body was recovered. The SP also noted that the policeman who was hit has been hospitalized.

Following the death, the accused’s community from the hometown had decided not to participate in the funeral prayers or allow his burial in the village graveyard.

It is reported that the other two accused are absconding, and search was continuing for them. The incident happened at Dhing when the minor girl was returning home from tuition on her bicycle. The accused raped the girl after surrounding her bicycle, and the girl was rescued by locals after being left injured on the roadside.

The incident had sparked fury in Dhing, with many conducting demonstrations demanding justice. The country is already on fire following the horrific Kolkata rape and murder of the trainee doctor, sparking nationwide outrage and women’s safety debates.
