West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee's Convoy Attacked During Visit To Family Of TMC Worker Who Died In Police Custody
Kolkata, West Bengal: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced a violent protest in Halisahar on August 9 while trying to meet the family of Birju Keot, a TMC worker who died in police custody.
During her visit to the deceased man’s family, the former chief minister faced stone throwing and other violent acts from the protesters, which she called anti-social elements backed by the ruling BJP.
Protesters allegedly threw stones, mud, shoes, and slippers at Banerjee’s convoy. Demonstrators reportedly surrounded Banerjee’s vehicle and staged a protest, smearing the car with mud and hurling water bottles, shoes and other footwear at the convoy. The TMC chief slammed police inaction during the atrocity. Meanwhile, the BJP has condemned the attack and called for legal action against those responsible.
The TMC worker allegedly died of police assault, as per the victim’s family, though the police reject the allegations claiming it to be a heart attack incident.
Speaking to the reporters, Banerjee later said that she could have died if the bricks and stones hit her. “If my car windows were not closed, it could have split my head open. I could have died. I have never faced such an attack. The police did nothing to protect us” the former chief minister said.

Her car was surrounded in Halishahar, North 24 Parganas, while she was on her way to meet a TMC worker.
