In Lawyer's Robes, Ex-West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Urges HC To Protect Citizens Amid Post-Poll Violence

Kolkata, West Bengal: Former West Bengal Chief Minister and All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday, May 14, appeared before the Calcutta High Court in a case regarding recent post-poll violence in the state.

Appeared in advocate robes, the TMC chief asked the court to protect the citizens from the violence unleashed in the state following declaration of the results of the State Assembly Elections. After BJP’s victory in the state, there have been widespread incidents of organised violence, including arson, looting and physical assault targeting TMC leaders and workers were reported from West Bengal.

Banerjee appeared before a Division Bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by advocate, Sirsanya Banerjee, son of TMC leader and Senior Advocate Kalyan Banerjee. The petition alleged that the violence was targeted at TMC workers and ordinary citizens and was organised by BJP party workers.

Notably, after Mamata Banerjee’s appearance in the high court in advocates robes, the Bar Council of India has sought details from West Bengal Bar Council on former chief minister’s enrolment and practice status.

In a social media post on X, the TMC, while sharing her video reaching the high court, noted that the former chief minister never abandons the people of Bengal in their hour of need. 

“She NEVER stops fighting for truth, justice, and constitutional values. And time and again, she rises above the politics of hatred with unmatched COMPASSION, COURAGE and CONVICTION. Whether confronting the injustice of SIR or standing firm against the unruly conduct of the BJP, she continues to prove that there is truly NO LEADER LIKE HER in the country today.”
