“Are The Duo Incompetent…”: Congress On Chinese National Duping 1,200 People In Gujarat

After Gujarat police have uncovered a major digital fraud case in which a Chinese national and his associates in Gujarat developed a football betting app that defrauded 1,200 people and stole an estimated Rs 1,400 crore in just nine days, Congress has come down hard on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

According to reports, the mastermind, Woo Uyanbe, who is from Shenzhen region in China, was operating from Patan and Banaskantha in Gujarat between 2020 and 2022 and mentioning this, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took the names of both Prime Minister and Home Minister who belong to Gujarat to ask questions about security and surveillance in their home state. He insinuated that the scam happened under their watch while both of them “prioritise surveillance and targeting of political opponents, independent voices, and anyone inconvenient to their politics”.

“The duo controls the national and state intelligence agencies. The duo controls the investigative agencies.  But the duo only prioritises surveillance and targeting of political opponents, independent voices, and anyone inconvenient to their politics. Meanwhile, a Chinese national comes to Gujarat, stays in the districts of Banaskantha and Patan, not far away from the Pakistan border, creates an illegal betting app and dupes 1200 people of Rs 1400 crore in 9 days, and just like that leaves Gujarat and India. Are the duo incompetent or they don’t care?,” asked the Congress leader in an X post.

The Gujarat Police has formed a Special Investigation Team or SIT to solve the case of the app scam, given the magnitude of large number of victims and the amount of money involved.

The report said that the CID was first alerted to the case in June 2022, when it was discovered that perpetrators were duping victims in both Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh using the app. The app promised users the opportunity to win big money by betting on football matches, but it was rigged and the suspects were able to manipulate the results of the matches to their advantage.
