Article 370 Abrogation Fifth Anniversary: BJP To Organise Rally; Mehbooba Mufti Claims House Arrest

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. On August 5, 2019, the Central government repealed Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Following the move, the Centre has  also brought the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act and divided the state into two union territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

In order to celebrate the occasion, Jammu and Kashmir unit of BJP will hold the ‘Ekatma Mahatsav’ rally today. The security measures has been strengthened across Jammu and Kashmir in view of the rally. It will take place at Bana Singh Stadium in R S Pura, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said BJP J&K General Secretary and Former MLC Adv. Vibodh Gupta.

Opposition leaders such as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq on Monday claimed that they were placed under house arrest.

“The day of August 5, 2019 is very important day in our lives. On this vital day 5 years back, a historic blunder was corrected and we, the people of Jammu & Kashmir, united completely with the rest of India, and are now able to enjoy all the rights, and the liberties and are progressing on the path of development”, Vibodh Gupta said.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties including the Congress and the PDP, slammed the BJP for holding celebrations, and termed August 5 as a “black day” in India’s history.

A spokesperson for the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) told the party will stage a protest at the Maharaja Hari Singh Park to condemn the abrogation of Article 370.

People’s Conference president Sajad Gani Lone said August 5 will be a reminder of “complete disempowerment of Kashmiri people”, Indian Express reports.

Attacking BJP over its celebration, J-K Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma “What was achieved in five years, the BJP should answer to the people, especially Dogras, instead of rubbing salt on their wounds,” India Today quotes as he is saying.

Amarnath Yatra 

In purview of the fifth anniversary celebration, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has suspended the Amarnath Yatra for a day. “The yatra has been halted for the day as a precautionary measure. No fresh batch was allowed from Jammu to Kashmir today,” an officer told PTI.

The Yatra started on June 29 and will conclude on August 19. This year, more than 4.90 lakh pilgrims have paid their respects at the 3,880-meter-high cave shrine so far.
