Despite the marginal improvement in the flood situation as rainfall has begun receding in some parts of the state, more than 3.90 lakh people have reportedly been affected by floodwaters in Assam. The death toll due to flood in Assam has risen to 37 this year.

Officials said that over 171,000 people have been displaced and only 15,160 have taken shelter in temporary relief camps. Assam faced its first wave of flood in the last week of May with the impact of Cyclone Remal. The second wave hit the state last week with the early arrival of monsoon.

As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the state has received 422.2 mm rainfall between June 1 and 19. The amount of rainfall was calculated to be 51% higher than normal.

While the number of affected people had decreased marginally from 4.09 lakh on Thursday, though the number of flood-hit districts remained the same, Karimganj was recorded to be the worst-affected district with over 2.40 lakh people hit.

Houses, cattle sheds, roads, bridges, embankments, and other infrastructure have been affected or damaged in different districts, the officials added.

Three major rivers including Barak, Kushiyara, and Kopili, are flowing above the danger level according to disaster management officials. At least 19 districts, including Kamrup, Tamulpur, Hailakandi, Udalguri, Hojai, Dhubri, Barpeta, Biswanath, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Karimganj, South Salmara, Goalpara, Darrang, Bajali, Nagaon, Cachar and Kamrup (M) are currently facing floods.

A 7-year-old boy was reported dead in Barpeta on Friday after a boat carrying ten passengers capsized. The incident took place near the Sarukhetri area on Thursday afternoon, according to the DDMA.
